I take the responsibility of being your counselor seriously and want to work with you to help solve whatever brings you to counseling. Participating in counseling can be a scary thing and requires a strong commitment on your part- change is never easy. After all, no one likes change but a baby with a dirty diaper. Counseling is a working relationship between the two of us. The goal is to work together to develop a plan to address what brought you to counseling. I can provide a safe, nonjudgmental environment so you can discuss tough issues. I cannot promise I have all the answers, but I will work tirelessly to help you solve the issues that brought you to this point in your life.
Many counselors list their specialties. This approach can be limiting to a counselor and overwhelm you. It can also give the appearance of not being inclusive of all kinds of people or groups. The most important aspect of the counseling experience is that we "click". I often tell the client that I work for them and please let me know what I need to know. I look forward to talking with you and determining whether we can work together to make any necessary changes. I want to work for you so you can later "fire" me when I'm no longer needed.
Whenever I am asked where I am from or to tell something about myself, I always start by saying I was an Army brat and that I lived in several places, including overseas. Growing up, I didn't live anywhere for more than three years, which taught me to love talking to new people. But I now say I am from Texas because I have lived there the longest. I am now married to the best husband and have the greatest kids anyone can ask for-they are my life. And, I LOVE HALLOWEEN!
My bachelor's degree in Psychology is from the University of Maryland in Germany. In 2000, I received my master's degree in Counseling from Amberton University in Dallas and am a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor, LPC-S. In 2014, I graduated from TWU with my bachelor's degree in nursing and am a Registered Nurse, RN. I have volunteered and worked in numerous locations including: military hospital, teen runaway and homeless youth shelter, child advocacy center, school based counseling center, residential treatment center for children and teens, psychiatric mobile crisis unit, psychiatric inpatient hospital as therapist and nurse, psychiatric partial hospital program as therapist and nurse, CIT trainer/volunteer with Dallas Police Department, Clinical Care Manager within primary care office, and private practice counseling.
I am grateful for many of the opportunities that I have had in my life, as well as many of the ditches that I dug for myself. Those ditches helped me learn how to climb out of the problems I may have created. I have the motivation to help others, along with the training and experience. I am also grateful to have the opportunity to work with others and help them reach their goals and realize their potential. I call on multiple counseling theories when working with clients, including CBT/cognitive behavioral therapy, ACT/acceptance and commitment therapy, solution-focused therapy, play therapy, and person-centered therapy. I was trained in EMDR therapy by Dr. Christie Sprowls in 2022.
It's important to meet the client where they are. My belief as a therapist is that you should be able to tell your counselor anything, and there is NO judgment. I invite my clients to let me know if there is anything else we need to do in counseling. You are the boss in the counseling session, and I am the provider there to help you reach your goals. Change begins in the counseling relationship so that you can apply it outside the office. Counseling is a relationship in which the client can dump their garbage with me and leave it. Setting up this relationship for success is my main job, and I will throw away the garbage.
